A letter to you?

May 31, 2011

My “Letter to Me” was published in Faith & Family yesterday.

You remember the post, don’t you? The one I wrote the other day to my 18-year-old self. (Lord knows she needed to hear from me.)

I especially enjoyed reading the comments that people made on the Faith & Family post:

What a great list!

I’d offer two bits of advice to my younger self:

1) Just because you love English and all things literary, don’t turn your nose up at guys who like science.  They might be Renaissance men in disguise.  (You can probably guess that I ended up marrying a techie!).

2) There are very few good listeners in the world.  Become one of them.

Peggy stated:

Love this!!!!  Oh, if only I could have read a letter from my 45 year-old self when I was 18!  What a different life I would have led.  But I guess maybe some of my bad choices led to my good ones….

And Rob wrote:

This is great!  I would add the following:

– Study harder!  Discipline yourself in college to help prepare you to be a man.
– Spend more time with your kids, especially when they’re young.
– Love your (future) wife.  You don’t know how long any of us are going to be here on this earth and we need to be there for each other as long as we can.
– RUN and JUMP!  You may not always be able to do so, and you should take full advantage now!

As a working mama, Rob’s second bullet point especially pulled on my heartstrings.

What would you tell your younger self if you had the chance? I’d love to read your thoughts.
