Ah, sugar, sugar

May 21, 2011

I split a kid’s meal with the 2-year-old at a an old-fashioned hamburger joint last night.

The hamburger was supposed to be for me — and the chicken strip for him — but instead, he spent most of the time pouring salt and pepper on some Saltine crackers.

And, like any good parent would do, I allowed him to forego any sort of nutritious dinner and use his free cookie coupon instead.

So we went and stood in line at the dessert counter where they sell hot fudge sundaes and fresh, gooey cookies and frothy milkshakes in frosty mugs.

And I thought to myself: working at a dessert shop would be a good job.

I concluded this from watching the people in line.

Kids from 6 to 60 stood with their noses pressed against the glass, their eyes wide – and their faces scrunched into anticipatory smiles.

“Oooh, I want that one!” said a woman to her husband, “No… that one!”

Her husband bit into a hot cookie and just grinned, “Get whatever you want!”

Toddlers and teenagers — married couple’s and grandparents — gathered around the case, picking their sweet treat, lost in a real-life Candy Land.

Some people say what the world needs now is love, sweet love.

But I think it just may need more sugar.
