Who I Am

February 6, 2011

Sorry about the lapse in posting over the past few days – it’s been a whirlwind of a weekend. This one is going to be a short one, too – but it has deep sentiment.

When I was in college, I loved this song by Jessica Andrews. I found it empowering and comforting when I was frustrated with waiting tables or sad after a break-up. The sentiment: “I know exactly who I am,” which rings so strong in her lyrics is perhaps the most important thing we can know.

Lately – as a young mom who has experienced some big transitions in a short amount of time – I’ve had moments of shaken ground. Moments where I wonder if I’ve lost myself, moments where I wonder if I will be everything I need to be for all the dear ones I love.

And today, while visiting my office to finish some weekend work – this song surprised me on the iTunes playlist. I hadn’t heard it in years, but it was just what I needed to hear. It reminded me of where I come from – and comforted me in where I’m going. Here’s the video:

Her lyrics, “I am Rosemary’s granddaughter,” also reminded me of the ultra-strong bond I had with my Nana, who passed away in 2001.

I have a little tribute I wrote for her years ago that I wanted to post on here, but it’s on my old computer which is in a closet under some old printers. I will pull it out and post it soon. In the meantime, Happy Superbowl Sunday!
